Vizano – Introducing – Interview

Written by on 10/12/2024

As a DJ and Producer in the Indo House and Ethnic House scenes, VIZANO is carving a journey that combines rich cultural influences with a relentless drive to innovate. Whether performing for crowds in his home city of London or taking his sound further afield to venues around the globe, VIZANO continues to develop a style that transcends borders, blending Afro House grooves with Mediterranean, Asian, and Ethnic touches.

In this exclusive interview, we delve into the mind of VIZANO to uncover the stories behind his sound, the experiences that shaped his artistry, and his vision for his future within the Electronic Music space.

Hi VIZANO, how are you?

I’m doing great. I recently finished playing a tour in India; now reflecting and strategising for future shows.

To start, can you tell us about your journey into Electronic Music? What motivated you to start establishing a career as a Producer and DJ?

I come from somewhat of a musical background – I started learning Piano and Guitar at 7 years old. I later began DJ’ing for private events, established an entertainment company, and then worked my way into nightlife. I developed as a DJ and later evolved into a producer and artist.

Your sound fuses Afro House with global elements like Mediterranean, Ethnic, and Asian influences. What inspired you to create such a distinctive blend?

I feel this is because of my passion to travel and explore different cultures and environments around the world. I’ve performed and travelled in over 30 countries. My upbringing in London (UK) was surrounded by people from different walks of life, most notably South Asian, Middle-Eastern and European. Furthermore, my friend circle is extremely diverse and international. This is reflected in the music I produce. I want all my records to relate to a variety of regions and cultures and provide a soundtrack that makes you want to travel.

Your debut tour of India is a major milestone in your journey. Can you share how you feel the experience of performing for different crowds has impacted your growth as an Artist?

It’s made me more adaptable as a DJ and artist. Even though music nowadays is easily accessible around the world, the way people react and appreciate it is different depending on the culture and environment you’re facing. For instance, in India, people react more to vocals and lyrics, as well as mashups and edits. Whereas in certain parts of Europe, the crowd cares more about the rhythm and groove, and how the DJ transitions and takes their audience on a journey. A well-seasoned Artist will be able to figure out what crowd they’re facing and adapt.

What challenges have you faced as an Artist trying to bring global and ethnic sounds to the forefront of Electronic Music?

Firstly, some markets are fixated on labelling genres based on popularity. For example, Afro and Latin House is enormously popular and, in some cases, has become a catch-all for anything “global” sounding or “foreign”. This doesn’t always feel accurate to me.

Secondly, there is a thin line between something that sounds electronic with ethnic elements vs. a South Asian lyric-heavy electronic track. Some audiences will pass on the latter, as it feels too attached to India’s ecosystem. The same may also apply to other ethnic cultures. The challenge for me is creating art that is understandable for a range of audiences.

What’s been the most rewarding part of your journey so far?

Being recognised as one of the key artists and champions of the growing “Indo House” genre and building a global fan base.

As someone pushing boundaries, how do you define success in the current Electronic Music landscape?

Having personal fulfilment, being content and appreciative of yourself as an artist, and building a community that understands your sound and journey.

When you think about your journey, which Artists stand out as the most influential in shaping your sound?

From a fusional aspect, I would say composers like AR Rahman and Quincy Jones. From a lyrical perspective, I’ve always leaned towards bands like Linkin Park and Deftones from an early age. When it comes to rhythms and overall Dance music, I would say Indo Warehouse from the South Asian and Ethnic side. From the global Dance side, I’m inspired by artists like Pablo Fierro, HVMZA, Damian Lazarus, Black Coffee, Diplo, Bedouin, plus many more.

As the first UK artist signed to Indo Warehouse, how did this milestone come about, and what does it signify for your career?

I actually performed for the very first Indo Warehouse event back in 2022 under my previous alias. Since then, the collective have been good friends and we’ve supported each other during this crazy growth period we’re going through. When I launched the VIZANO project with my debut track “Bahena” earlier this year, it made perfect sense, both from a sonic and personal “full-circle moment” perspective, to sign with them.

Finally, where do you see yourself in five years from now? What goals are you working towards next?

My vision is to perform my sound and style on the biggest stages around the world, both at festivals and nightlife venues. I don’t want to be majorly confined to one country or market, nor one specific type of cultural audience. I thrive on living around diversity. I aim to keep travelling the world and build a community that’s invested in the VIZANO sound. I have longer-term plans to grow the brand beyond music and tap into other areas of art and lifestyle. For the short-to-medium term, however, the main priority is to create a momentum of consistent releases. So, expect new music very soon!
